Taking the missus to work

Speaking of work, we’ve been so busy at x these last few days that I ended up going in on my day off, something that I had expected would happen, but I went in with Lia.

It was really nice to spend time with her and she had a go at just about every job except customer service. It was also easier for me to leave the house because she was coming too. I know it’s kinda pathetic or perhaps corny but sometimes I just don’t want to leave her behind.

Perhaps we might do this a little more often.

I’ve been dreaming of..

a new camera.

NO! This is not some bad Photoshop make over. This is my camera which has started to sporadically take really bad photos. The LCD display is playing up and the zoom lens won’t extend fully without creating errors. The camera still does take nice photos but it’s increasingly becoming a hit or miss affair.

So I have been looking at cameras online and trying to get an idea of what is available and, with a rough idea of what I wanted.. Then I went shopping.

I went to a few camera shops and saw some different cameras including a digital SLR which I was really rapt in but I was also more confused with choice.

I had seen some very nice cameras and all had good points to them but the SLR was sitting at the front of the list even though it was more expensive than the others.

In the end Lia and I walked and talked and worked out what I need the camera for. I decided that, as much as I wanted to get the SLR, I should stick to my goal of getting a high end standard camera.

In the end I went for a Fugifilm Finepix s9600, deciding to stick with the brand of camera that has served me so well for over 14,000 photos. It also means I can continue using the same media as before which is good.

A new camera

This is a 9 megapixel model with a good zoom and a super-macro function which gets in really close. I am looking forward to taking some for this website but in the meantime, here is one that Lia took.

I’m watching you read this!

Wild weather

Last Sunday night while I was at work I received an SMS from Lia letting me know that the power had gone out. Nothing new there, I don’t know how many times I have blogged about the atrocious state of our city’s power supply.

What surprised me was coming home to find a mess of destruction down at the bottom of our street with trees uprooted and fences down. Apparently there had been rain and strong wind gusts, although the temperature outside at 1am was still in the low 30’s.

Down in East Fremantle where I was working there was nothing but heat. Isn’t it amazing what just 30 kilometres can do!

The next day I was speaking to my aunt and found that she had lost her pagola. A heavy timber structure that is near her pool just lifted off the ground, flew over the fence and hit the side of the neighbours house, taking out the air-conditioner condenser.

Interestingly enough, the fence was not damaged by the sudden departure of a tonne of timber and perhaps more strangely, an empty wine bottle sitting on a table under the pagola was still sitting there.

Although I could not find anything about it on the news we think that it was some tornado activity. It’s the only thing that could have explained the concentration of force.

Skyworks 2007

With the temperature in Perth going over 41C, it was a last minute decision to head towards the city to watch the Australia day fireworks display.

Rather than attempting to join the chaos that occurs around all the river vantage points we decided to watch them from a park in Highgate and, despite the hot gusty winds, it was a really pleasant evening. We even managed to avoid the usual traffic problems getting home.

I fired off about 150 shots but I’ll just place up a few of the best

Firefox 2.0

After a false start I have upgraded to the latest Firefox browser.

When Version 2 first came out I installed it onto my computer only to find a minor bug in the way the tabbing works due to a customisation that was set up.

My configuration of Google was part of the problem, but it would have difficulties in many other sites as well.

In Google, you can set your preferences to open up search results in a new window. I then use Firefox to force new window links into a new tab instead.  It makes searching for things very easy because you can open up a few pages based on your search request without having to go back all the time.

The bug was causing Firefox to open two new “empty” tags and the link in a new window.

Version 2.0.0.1 has fixed this minor annoyance.

The new Internet Explorer, version 7 is also available now and still it does not comply with W3 standards for CSS rendering, which makes coding for IE a royal pain in the proverbial.

If you are using IE, please concider using Firefox

Header updated

I have updated the header on this site as the last one was.. Shall we say, a little dull.

I was not in a happy place when I did the last header, hence the dull colour and geometric rigidity.  This feels more like me.

Enjoy!
